Well, for those of you who didn't know, I just got out of a week in the hospital. Nasty staph infection, got a gaping hole in my leg where it had to be dug out. I was also diagnosed as a diabetic.

For those of you who had to endure my previous rants on the subject of being diabetic, let me assure you that they did manage to convince me in the hospital not to come home immediately and load up Grandad's shotgun due to this diagnosis. I'm weak as a kitten right now, but I'm also not going to immediately go and shoot myself.

Anybody who wants the gory details, replay here; I'm a bit tired at the moment, so I'm going to sign off now.

BTW...how did you end up with said staph infection in your leg?

From: [identity profile] duane-kc.livejournal.com
Don't really know. It was apparently building up for some time. According to the docs, my high blood sugar (it was 390 when I was admitted; normal is 90-100) contributed to "opportunistic infections".

Yeowch!

So it just appeared in your leg? Wierd... Then again 'wierd' is typical of you and medical situations :-)

Glad to hear you're home and feeling a bit better.

I'm so sorry I didn't know you were sick!! I'm glad you're feeling better, though.

Being diabetic isn't altogether that horrible. Once you get used to taking your sugar, and eating regularly. Meds help, and exercise (blahblahblahblahblah) No, you may NOT shoot yourself. Cliff and I were actually considering bringing Shorty out to Faire this year so everyone can meet him!

[grin] Well, until I hit the ER Sunday at oh-dark-thirty, I didn't realize I was anywhere as sick as I was myself.

And I'm looking forward to meeting Shorty.

Duane,

I called you a couple times, but only got to talk to you once - long enough to be told you didn't feel like talking. The other two times I was headed off by staff before I even got to you. So I'm glad you're home, and I'm sorry we didn't get in touch.

And let's not talk about kittens shall we...

No problem. Thanks for trying; when you originally called, I'd been feverish for 4 days and hadn't realized it, so I wasn't exactly lucid at that point.

Hey. I'm right there with you. I've got diabetecs on both sides of my family, and I've seen what it's done to my mom's best friend. Conversely, though, that woman considers herself more blessed than probably anyone else I know. I know what that thought process is like, but when you're actually faced with it, you end up with more courage than you knew you had. Let me know if there's anything I can do, including listening, anytime you need it.

*hugs*

Diabetes is only a death sentence if you aren't willing to control it. I was told by someone that either you live with diabetes or you die with it. Please keep tight control over it. We would all miss you if you weren't around.

Agreed. One other thing. NEVER skip a diabetic eye appointment. If you control your sugars you'll be fine, but uncontrolled sugars can lead straight to diabetic retinopathy, which is a leading cause of blindness.

What do you need? I didn't find out you were home til it was too late to call. Figured you'd be worn out, anyway--hospitals do that! I am booked tomorrow night and Wed. night with people from out of town. I can bring food or whatever you need on Thurs. What would you like?

*huggle* Feeling for you. Hospitals suck... I've been in them... "they steal your pants, hurt you, starve you, expose you to disease... then charge you for it. A lot."

We hope you feel better soon we would miss not having you around!

sympathies & e-hugs...

glad to know you're home, at least. (sorry...I'm behind on the whole net thing lately)
Drop me an email and let me know if I'm going to see you Sunday, would you? Or call me, if it's after early tomorrow morning, since I'll be on the road.
Myself and the maternal unit are in your area for all weekend, and I _am_ going to get to see you, right? of course right.

This is Doug, one of the twins from Rocky in KC. I had completed surgery for an oral infection in March 2004 when I found out. I don't know the exact figure, but my blood sugar was over 400. I was in intensive care for four days following the surgery and I was out of the hospital a day after I got out of ICU. If you have any concerns, please email me at jldwrestlefan@lycos.com.
